El Chupacabra

Let me begin by saying that The Detonator was actually pretty good. It marks a highlight in the career of Wesley Snipes which has quickly faded from its days of Hollywood blockbusters to the lowly holding pattern of the B-movie industry. The most important characteristic of Snipes is this: he is not Steven Segal. That's right! God bless Segal, he knows how to turn out the same reptetitive and mundane crap which I personally love, but Snipes, well, he's young, can move faster than a sloth shot up with percocet, and he can deliver his lines with alacrity.

And the vehicle for his quick moves, martial arts know-how, and acting abilities turned out to be the Porsche of B-movies. Sure it's another B movie from Romania, shot entirely in Bucharest for a pittance and with a large pool of eager stuntmen waiting to disembowel themselves for some American 1 dollar bills, but damnit, it seemed to have a budget, a plot that was at least partly sensible, and some acceptable martial arts fight scenes. I was pretty surprised after being trained by Segal's Romanian exploits to loathe the mere mention of that place. Now I like Romania and maybe I'll move there with my family. Well, no, but this movie is a definite peak on Snipes' line of recent productions. Now I just need to contain myself until Chasing the Dragon which is a Snipe flick destined for theatres (gasp!).

The most remarkable thing about the Detonator is that is was a decent action flic. Wesley Snipes seems to still have the skills to fight, unlike certain other action stars past their prime. If that conjures any names in your head, I probably mean them. The Detonator was much better than The Marksman, and provided us with a pleasant surprise.

The premise is that Welsey is an ex-CIA (aren't they all ex-CIA these days) agent in Bucharest trying to bring some weapons dealers to justice. Its a bit odd that he'd be doing this of his own accord, but he is. Its very odd that he'd choose to use a gay-weapons dealer as his cover. Being the only black man in Romania might not arouse suspicion, but being gay and a weapons reseller seems mighty fishy. It takes a phone call from an unknown source to blow his cover though. After a quick gun fight, Wesley spends the rest of the movie tracking down the source and protecting the widow of another weapons dealer. Shes being hunted by the weapons dealers uncle, who also happens to be the owner of Romania's top soccer team. Over the course of the next 80 minutes, we get gun fights, explosions, car chases, and topless casinos.

Overall I'd recommend the Detonator if you are looking for a new action movie. Decent fight scenes, decent story line, decent acting, and gratuitous nudity. What more can you ask for in an action movie?

Apparently the best thing to do when you are on trial for murder is to go to another country and try to setup a one man sting to under cover an ilegal weapons operation.  Houses and cars in Bucarest are really easy to break into.  Also Wesley Snipes as a gay arms salesman is pure genius.

WESLEY SNIPES WANTS SOME OF THE ACTION FOR MAKING B-MOVIES IN BUCHAREST.  THAT PLACE IS A GOLD MINE FOR B-MOVIE SETTINGS AND HE WANTS HIS PIECE OF THE PIE.  WELL HE GOT IT AND NOW HE IS FOURTEEN DOLLARS AND THIRTY FIVE CENT RICHER FOR IT.  OH WAIT, OR IS THE U.S. GOVERNMENT FOURTEEN DOLLARS AND THIRTY FIVE CENT RICHER?  YOU HAVE TO FLEE THE COUNTRY FOR TAX EVASION AND NOW THE ONLY WORK YOU CAN GET IS DOING MOVIES IN BUCHAREST, THAT IS THE SMARTEST THING FOR YOUR CAREER I THINK.  RUN WESLEY RUN!      

IF YOU WANT INFO ON THE MOVIE ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS I THINK IF THERE IS A BAD GUY ASSOCIATION FOR ACTION MOVIES THEY SHOULD FILE A GRIEVANCE ON THIS MOVIE, BECAUSE THE WRITERS SURE MADE THE BAD GUYS LOOK RETARDED.  WESLEY SNIPES IS IN SOME DIRTY CIA SAFE-HOUSE WITH A FEW OTHER PEOPLE AND THE BAD GUYS SOMEHOW CLIMB THE OUTSIDE WALLS OF THE SAFE-HOUSE (YOU DON'T SEE ANY ROPES OR LATTER'S SHOWING HOW THEY MADE IT UP) AND BEFORE WESLEY SNIPES BEGINS WALKING UP THE STAIRS OF IN THE SAFE-HOUSE A GOD DAMN SOCCER BALL ROLLS DOWN THE STAIRS FOR NO APPARENT REASON.  SO YOU'RE TELLING ME THE BAD GUYS WANT TO GET CAUGHT BY KICKING A SOCCER BALL DOWN THE STAIRS SO WESLEY CAN BLOW THEIR ASS'S AWAY.  WOW, GENIUS WRITERS HOW DO YOU THINK OF THIS PURE GOLD?  THERE IS SOME OTHER POINTLESS SCENES AND FLAWS IN THE MOVIE BUT I WILL LET YOU DECIDE IF YOU WANT TO SEE THIS MOVIE OR NOT.  ............................................................... WE BOTH KNOW NO ONE IS SEEING THIS MOVIE.
