Easy to see why this is a cult classic
since its so bizarre. Theres a summer camp where some of the campers are old enough to have kids that are also campers at this camp. The kitchen staff consists of a pedophile and racist stereotypes. Some of the counselors dress in an overtly homosexual way, but its never mentioned. Maybe because I was 3 when this movie came out, so I don't remember guys wearing cut of shirts and short shorts and nobody thinking anything of it, but it definitely seems odd now. And some of the acting was horrible.
Sleepaway Camp is a slasher, but it was about kids fitting in at camp as much as it was about murder. It centers around Angela, an incredibly shy and creepy girl who gets picked on by everyone, Ricky, Angela's cousin whose girlfriend from last year is now the camp slut and doesn't want anything to do with him, and Paul, Ricky's friend who wants kiss Angela in the most awkward way. The pattern this movie followed was:
- Angela would stare at someone not saying anything
- That someone would attack Angela
- Ricky would rush in and defend Angela, then get in crap from the camp counselors.
- That someone would die a horrible yet avoidable death or disfiguration.
Sleepaway Camp loses a lot quality points just for the DVD transfer. It looks like it was taken off of a VHS tape that was in a box of magnets for the past twenty years. If everyone in this didn't look like an eighties fashion victim, this movie could have come from the seventies.
If you are into B-movies, this one is a must. Its cheesy, its bizarre, and apparently in the bargain bin at Walmart.

Whatever dude you kissed a guy
Now this movie was filmed back in the early eighties and many of the things that came up in the movie were a totally area at the time. The movie starts with a father in a boat with his kids and boat tips over and they are just swimming in the water when another boat with a water skier zooms over the lot of them and seemingly kills the father and son leaving the daughter Angela. The daughter is now living with her cousin and the two of them are sent to camp by the odd ball mother. Angela seems to be very shy compared to the out going Ricky. Slowly campers and staff members start to die all of whom seemed to have had altercations with Angela before Ricky came in to defend her. Angela begins to come out of her shell to some of the counselors as well as Ricky’s best friend. The murders continue with the Camp owner just brushing them off as being accidents until one of the counselors he was planning a late night meeting with turns up dead. Thinking that Ricky was responsible the camp owner tracks him down and beats him like deranged gorilla. Thinking that he has avenged the murders and stopped a killer he looks up just in time to be killed by the real murder via arrow to the throat. Meanwhile a late night meeting is planned between Angela and her new boyfriend. The other counselors learn of some of the other murders and split up to try and find the campers as well as the killer. The find Angela on the beach standing butt naked holding a severed head. At this point everyone finds out that Angela was the real killer and a boy all along. It seems that Ricky’s mom always wanted a daughter, and just decided to make the surviving child into a girl. That coupled the apparent gay relationship of Angela’s father pretty much set everything into motion. So the age range for the campers seems to vary from any where from 12 -30. Also the clothing does seem to fit the under lining gay motif of the film with guys wearing cut off shirts and shorter shorts then the girls.

Deceptive Cover
I can't complain about this cover. Although a shoe was never stabbed with a bloody knife, I understand that it is just meant to be symbolic of the terror and mayhem at sleep-away camp. I would like to point out the sweet 1980's shoes.Deception level (Between 0 and 10)
